FG says it rebuilt 10 bridges per state, spent N250 billion on roads

The Federal Government has announced that it has reconstructed over 10 bridges in each of Nigeria's 36 states and completed more than 260 emergency road rehabilitation projects across the country in the last three years, at a total cost of more than N250 billion. Minister of Works Senator Dave Umahi revealed these figures during a stakeholder engagement and the launch of new road projects in Lagos.

Umahi also provided an update on the repair work on the Eko Bridge, which is in a critical condition but has been kept open to avoid severe disruption for Lagos residents. The remedial work planned includes reinstalling seven piles, bypassing the damaged pile cap section, and installing a new pile cap, a solution that is expected to last 15 to 20 years before a permanent repair is implemented.

Additionally, Umahi highlighted the inauguration of 40 guards tasked with overseeing the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway. Their duties include addressing issues such as hawking, loitering, commercial motorcycling, and refuse dumping. The government's commitment to transparency is demonstrated by the decision to invite the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to independently audit ongoing road projects.
