Feds approve assistance to help B.C. fire evacuees with shelter

Following the rapid spread of wildfires in British Columbia, the federal government has granted emergency assistance to aid evacuees in finding shelter. Emergency Management Minister Eleanor Olszewski announced that her department is collaborating with the province to ensure the necessary support reaches those most in need. Many evacuees, including those at a Penticton evacuation center, had been sleeping in their vehicles for days, with Allan Jennens having spent 14 hours waiting to register for assistance.

Some elderly individuals shared their gratitude for the opportunity to use their cars as temporary beds to accommodate others in need. The Penticton Trade and Convention Centre has hosted evacuees from Summerland, Okanagan-Similkameen, and the Penticton Indian Band, with over 10,000 homes under evacuation orders in the affected regions.

Despite learning that his family's home remained undamaged, Tom Joseph expressed relief, yet also recognized the uncertainty faced by others. Joanne Liboiron recounted the fear of the sudden evacuation and emphasized the importance of heeding police advice when sirens sound. Wildfire footage from the Small community of Faulder shows the devastation, with homes reduced to empty foundations and charred remains of vehicles.

The Bald Range fire expanded to over 100 square kilometers by Saturday afternoon, prompting a mass evacuation from Summerland and Peachland, with approximately 1,200 to 1,500 residents affected. B.C. Premier David Eby declared a state of emergency, describing the fire's impact as a "bomb going off." B.C. Emergency Management Minister Kelly Greene acknowledged the overwhelming response, recommending people register online to expedite the process.
