Court sentences barber for dumping refuse in public drain

A barber in Hohoe, Ekpane Seyram, has been sentenced by a court for dumping rubbish in a public drain. Seyram admitted his guilt and was given a choice between a GHS 600 fine or two months in jail if he failed to pay. The case was brought to light on July 27 at 8 PM when the convict was seen dumping trash into the drain near Konuvie Plaza.

A video captured the incident which later circulated on social media. The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) and the Environmental Health Office took notice at 9:26 PM and launched an investigation, apprehending Seyram on Wednesday around 10 AM. Seyram claimed he collected waste from a nearby bar owned by Madam Cecilia Attamah and Vincentia Attamah and discarded it in the drain.

The local assembly had installed skip bins in strategic locations throughout the municipality for proper waste disposal. The court heard that Seyram's actions were deemed "barbaric" and harmful to the environment, potentially causing flooding and disease outbreaks.
