Court delivers 40-year sentence for domestic violence

A 44-year-old man from Secunda, Werner Müller, has been sentenced to 40 years of direct imprisonment in the Middelburg High Court for the brutal murder of his wife, René Müller. The couple had been married for just two months before the incident. René's body was found hidden in a bag in the backyard of their townhouse on April 13, with multiple stab wounds.

Müller fled the country after the murder and was arrested in Mozambique on April 14. The court heard that the couple had a series of disagreements prior to the incident, including an argument on April 11 over Müller's depression medication. During the argument, Müller followed his wife to the kitchen, where he stabbed her with a kitchen knife.

He then attempted to cover up the crime by cleaning the house with pine gel and hiding her body in the backyard. Müller acknowledged the severity of his actions and the gravity of domestic violence in South Africa during the plea and sentencing agreement. Senior State Advocate Themba Lusenga argued that the murder was a heinous offense that undermined the sanctity of human life.

The court found that Müller's actions were unnecessary and committed within the context of domestic violence. In addition to the 40-year sentence for murder, Müller was also sentenced to 5 years for defeating the administration of justice, which will run concurrently with the murder sentence, resulting in an effective 40-year prison term.

The court also declared Müller unfit to possess a firearm. The National Prosecuting Authority welcomed the sentence as a strong message that domestic and gender-based violence will be met with serious consequences.
