Can a 200MP phone outshoot a 100MP camera?

The question of whether a 200MP smartphone camera can surpass a 100MP mirrorless camera has been the subject of debate. In a recent comparison between the Oppo Find X9 Ultra, which features a 200MP camera with Hasselblad Master camera mode, and the Hasselblad X2D II 100C with its Hasselblad Natural Color Solution, the results suggest that the mirrorless camera holds an edge in real-world conditions.

The Oppo Find X9 Ultra, on the other hand, is considered the best camera phone available, thanks to its excellent lenses and Hasselblad Master image tuning. While both systems share a common imaging pipeline, there are significant differences in sensor size, with the X2D II boasting a larger medium format sensor. The Oppo phone utilizes four smaller sensors, along with four lenses, while the Hasselblad X2D II has a single zoom lens offering an equivalent focal range of 27-78mm.

In a series of tests conducted in various outdoor conditions, the Hasselblad X2D II demonstrated superior color reproduction, particularly in challenging scenes with green grass, flowers, and magenta tones. The mirrorless camera's ability to maintain authentic hues and tones was evident in its faithful rendering of colors, even in tricky lighting situations.

In contrast, the Oppo Find X9 Ultra showed a tendency to skew towards magenta tones and overcompensate with blue hues, a result of its reliance on computational HDR. This software-based HDR process artificially boosted shadows while dimming highlights, leading to unnatural color casts and loss of shadow and dimensionality in the processed images.

When it came to dynamic range, the Hasselblad X2D II maintained 15.3 stops of dynamic range, rendering faithful tonality without the need for computational correction. In comparison, the Oppo Find X9 Ultra's HDR approach often resulted in flat, overexposed images, particularly in backlit and shadow-heavy scenes. While there may be closer results in ideal conditions or controlled studio setups, the Oppo Find X9 Ultra's performance in challenging real-world conditions indicates that the 100MP mirrorless camera still holds an advantage in terms of color accuracy, dynamic range, and overall image quality.
