Cachalia urges police to confront gang leaders who ‘steal young people’ from communities

Acting police minister Firoz Cachalia has urged police management to employ all lawful methods to eliminate violent gangs. He made this statement after visiting Reiger Park on Sunday, where he addressed a community devastated by the murder of four individuals, including two police officers linked to the anti-gang unit. The victims were Constable Sphiwe Sibeko, Constable Thapelo Tlomatsane, and two female civilians who were killed in a Friday evening ambush described by police as a targeted attack.

Cachalia called for religious groups, sports organizations, and civil society to unite in providing alternatives to gang involvement. He emphasized the need for communities to take a stand, reclaim their streets, and collaborate with the police to stop gang violence, drug trafficking, and addiction. Specifically targeting gang leaders, Cachalia warned them not to believe that the public overlooks their actions, nor that they can continue to exploit young people or kill police officers with impunity.

He instructed the police leadership to confront the gangs and assured the community that the police would act within the law to bring the culprits to justice. The South African Police Service (Saps) reaffirmed that those responsible for the incident would be relentlessly pursued and brought to justice. In addition, the Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (Popcru) stressed that more than mere "ceremonial condemnation" was necessary to eradicate gangsterism from communities.

Popcru highlighted the dangerous reality that law enforcement personnel are often targeted while performing their duties and urged the government to provide adequate resources and support to anti-gang units. They argued that officers entering dangerous environments without sufficient intelligence, resources, and operational backing place their lives at undue risk, and the public demands a state that protects, equips, and supports these individuals as they fulfill their constitutional duties.
