Bok Women’s strengths shine as Fiji victory delivers plenty of positives

In their opening Test match, the Springbok Women showcased their set-piece prowess and adaptability to secure a convincing 55-12 victory over Fiji in Suva. With a largely new lineup, South Africa's dominance in scrums, lineouts, and mauls proved crucial, as they amassed nine tries. Captain Libbie Janse van Rensburg led the team for the first time, emphasizing the importance of a strong set-piece game.

Assistant coach Laurian Johannes-Haupt expressed satisfaction with the team's ability to score through various means, rather than relying on a single approach. The integration of sevens regulars Zintle Mpupha and Patience Mokone was particularly noteworthy, as they quickly adapted to Test rugby. Shiniqwa Lamprecht also earned her Test debut at center.

While the Bok Women had room for improvement in the breakdown, their performance in the second half was commendable. Janse van Rensburg believes South Africa can be more direct in the backs for their upcoming Test in Lautoka, maintaining the option for wide play. The victory holds special significance for Janse van Rensburg, as it extends her record as the Springbok Women's leading Test points scorer to 221.

The team is content with the results, having displayed depth and attacking variety. They will relocate to Nadi for the second Test, aiming to secure a series sweep.
