B.C. wildfire showing little new growth after forcing thousands to flee

In British Columbia's Interior, a wildfire has left thousands of residents displaced after consuming homes and natural surroundings in its path. Dawn Wertz, who was celebrating her niece’s 21st birthday party at a home in Summerland, witnessed the fire’s early stages. The fire, initially measuring just 50 hectares, rapidly expanded and consumed approximately 100 square kilometres on Saturday.

The Bald Range fire’s growth has been limited by geography, as much of the front has reached the western side of Okanagan Lake. BC Wildfire Service crews have been working on containment lines and protecting homes on the outskirts of Summerland, a city of 12,000 residents, to prevent further destruction. One reported fatality occurred west of Summerland, while the B.C. government declared a provincial state of emergency due to the extensive structure loss.

The fire affected numerous facilities, including the Summerland Wildlife Rehabilitation Society, which lost both their pets and the animals in their care. About 10,000 homes are under evacuation orders, while an additional 3,300 are under evacuation alerts. Firefighting helicopters were deployed to rescue over fifty residents trapped by the flames. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
