Assam flood toll reaches 100 with 2 more deaths

Three weeks after heavy flooding devastated four districts of Assam, claiming 99 lives and causing extensive damage, the state government initiated a survey to assess the extent of the destruction. The survey, set to conclude by August 30, will evaluate the losses suffered by affected families, providing vital compensation for losses and assistance for rehabilitation.

Revenue and disaster management minister Keshab Mahanta confirmed that the survey would focus on Sibsagar, Charaideo, Jorhat, and Golaghat, regions already submerged by the flooding. The survey is expected to commence immediately, with government officials visiting each affected household to document damages. Compensation will range from ₹1.78 lakhs to over ₹3.5 lakhs per family, depending on the severity of the damage.

For livestock, compensation is estimated at ₹37,500 per cattle, while handlooms, goats, sheep, and pigs will receive ₹5,000, ₹4,000, and ₹4,000 respectively. The government aims to begin disbursing monetary aid by mid-September.
