AI transformation likely to accelerate as companies shift from adoption to enterprise-wide value creation: Report

A new report from McKinsey anticipates that the integration of AI will shift from initial deployment to comprehensive enterprise-wide transformation. This shift is expected to enable companies to fundamentally redesign workflows, operating models, and roles to unlock significant business value. While many organisations are currently in the early stages of AI adoption, only a small percentage have reached the advanced stage of reinvention.

The report, based on a survey of 750 employees and leaders worldwide, identifies three key stages of AI transformation: enablement, automation, and reinvention. However, the majority of organizations are still focusing on the first two stages, with just 11% of leaders reporting that their company has reached the reinvention stage.

Interestingly, the study reveals a notable gap between employee readiness and organizational readiness for AI adoption. While 70% of employees feel personally prepared to use AI, only 27% of leaders believe their organizations are ready to undergo the necessary changes for an AI-driven future. McKinsey found that organizational readiness accounts for nearly 50% of the difference in reported AI value creation, compared to 25% for individual readiness.

Workflow redesign emerges as a critical factor in unlocking enterprise value through AI. Leaders who redesigned their workflows were five times more likely to report enterprise value capture compared to those who did not. As organizations progress to the automation stage, building AI-fluent leadership and employee capabilities becomes increasingly important.

Teams with highly AI-fluent leaders were three times more likely to report enterprise value creation, while leaders who received training to develop new AI skills were three times more likely to achieve value creation.

Ultimately, McKinsey highlights that the greatest opportunity lies in the reinvention stage, where companies fundamentally redesign work, roles, and operating models around AI. Organizations that can continuously iterate, redesign, and adapt faster than their competitors will be better positioned to convert rapidly evolving AI capabilities into sustained enterprise value.
