AI experts may join Territorial Army soon

New Delhi: Discussions are underway in the defence ministry to significantly expand the mandate of the Territorial Army, incorporating experts in cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence, according to sources familiar with the matter. The move aims to infuse technical talent into the part-time military reserve force, which is composed of volunteers who maintain their civilian careers.

Experts from the realms of information warfare and cybersecurity are also expected to be part of the broader mandate under consideration. The options for expanding the Territorial Army's capabilities include direct recruitment of specialists into junior ranks or granting honorary commissions to technical experts to encourage their participation.

Recent steps have already been taken to bolster the Army's role in emerging technologies. In October 2024, a Territorial Army Innovation Cell was established to leverage expertise in AI, drones, and cybersecurity solutions. The cell organizes an annual innovation hackathon and provides internships to talented participants to work within military technical units.

Additionally, a national-level hackathon is scheduled for the following month, featuring challenges such as bug hunting, developing AI-driven security architectures to enhance national cyber-defence capabilities, and creating digital content.

Currently, the Territorial Army comprises approximately 44,400 personnel and 59 units spread across the country, including infantry battalions and engineering units. It also has ecological taskforces dedicated to environment management and climate change mitigation.
