Accused Thai school shooter watched violent content online

A 14-year-old Thai boy allegedly carried out a school shooting that left eight people dead outside Bangkok, according to police. The teenager had previously watched violent content online, and a teacher had confiscated an air gun from him last year, police revealed. Atthapol Anusit, deputy commissioner of the Provincial Police Region 1, stated that the boy had shown interest in firearms for about one to two years.

When questioned about any bullying, the boy's mother reported that he always said there was nothing unusual. The boy, who lived with his grandparents after his parents separated, was described by his mother as bright and cheerful. Police have interviewed 17 witnesses so far and found a knife and other evidence at the crime scenes, including a firearm and spent cartridge cases.

Additionally, a personal computer was discovered which showed the boy had viewed violent social media content. The Ministry of Education plans to implement new safety protocols, including mental health screenings and emergency response drills, to prevent future incidents. The shooting marks Thailand's worst mass killing since 2022, reigniting discussions about gun control in the country.
