Abiodun urges collective action as Ogun backs tree planting campaign

Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun emphasized the importance of collective action in tree planting to protect the environment and secure a sustainable future. Speaking at the 2026 Ogun Tree Planting Day commemoration, the governor highlighted the urgent need for climate change mitigation, noting that its effects were already impacting communities, livelihoods, and the economy.

Abiodun stated that tree planting is more than just placing seedlings in the ground; it is a commitment to environmental protection and ecosystem restoration. He praised President Bola Tinubu's initiatives towards environmental sustainability, such as the Nigeria Energy Transition Plan and National Clean Cooking Policy. The governor commended Ogun's commitment to supporting these national goals through investments in afforestation, renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, green infrastructure, waste management, and improved flood-control mechanisms.

He encouraged participants to sustain tree planting efforts and ensure the mature growth of the planted trees. The Ogun State Head of Service urged public servants, corporate organizations, educational institutions, community leaders, and residents to integrate tree planting into their daily lives. The Commissioner for Forestry reported that the state government had revitalized all six moribund forest reserves, increasing the forest cover.

The Commissioner for Environment highlighted the environmental benefits of trees, including carbon capture, improved air quality, water conservation, and the provision of habitats for wildlife. He urged residents to nurture and protect every tree seedling, emphasizing the role of students and young people as "Environmental Champions of Tomorrow."
