Abiodun urges collective action as Ogun backs tree planting campaign

Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State emphasized the importance of collective action in tree planting during the commemoration of the 2026 Ogun Tree Planting Day. Speaking at the event, Abiodun highlighted the theme "Root for the Future: Plant a Tree, Heal the Earth," noting that climate change had become an increasingly urgent issue, affecting communities, livelihoods, and the economy.

He described tree planting as a responsibility to protect the environment, restore degraded ecosystems, and secure a sustainable future. The governor praised President Bola Tinubu's focus on environmental sustainability through initiatives like the Nigeria Energy Transition Plan and National Clean Cooking Policy. He commended Ogun's commitment to supporting these national goals through investments in afforestation, renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, green infrastructure, waste management, and improved flood-control mechanisms.

Abiodun urged participants to continue their tree-planting efforts, ensuring the trees matured through proper care. The Ogun State Head of Service, Olanrewaju Iskeel Saka, called on various stakeholders to integrate tree planting into their daily lives. The Commissioner for Forestry, Taiwo Oludotun, reported that all six forest reserves had been revitalized under the Abiodun administration, increasing the state's forest cover.

Complementary statements from the Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, underscored the environmental benefits of trees, such as carbon capture, improved air quality, water conservation, erosion control, and habitats for wildlife, as well as their contribution to the physical and mental well-being of residents. Oresanya encouraged residents and especially students to become "Environmental Champions of Tomorrow" by planting trees in various public spaces and encouraging others to do the same.
