570 killed in 596 security incidents in July – Report

In July 2026, at least 570 individuals lost their lives in 596 security incidents spanning all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory of Nigeria, according to the latest report by SARI Global. The Islamic State West Africa Province intensified its attacks against humanitarian systems in the North-East, specifically targeting schools and supply routes.

The report, published by SARI Global's Nigeria Monthly Security Overview for July 2026, revealed a 32.4% decrease in incidents and a 28% reduction in fatalities compared to June 2026. Most of the violence occurred in the initial week of the month, with the deadliest incident involving a clash in Niger State and bandit strikes in Zamfara and Benue states.

Borno State, despite having the lowest number of fatalities, was identified as the most violent state, reporting 80 incidents and 34 fatalities. The report emphasized that schools were high-value targets for ISWAP, with repeated attacks on educational facilities in Borno. Government-affiliated forces initiated 266 of the incidents, resulting in 110 deaths, while non-state armed actors were responsible for 186 incidents and caused 290 deaths, highlighting the higher toll of civilian casualties.
