‘We’re not in the circus’ – Abdeslam Ouaddou explains Orlando Pirates selection call

Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has shed light on his team selection strategy as he navigates squad fitness and the club's ambition to win the MTN8. Pirates secured a 2-1 victory over Durban City in extra time at Orlando Amstel Arena, advancing to the MTN8 semi-finals. Their goal came from Ghampani Lungu in the 120th minute, propelling them to a pursuit of their fifth consecutive MTN8 title.

However, Ouaddou faces the challenge of managing a squad that has experienced significant changes during the off-season. A few players still require minutes to build match fitness and adapt to the demands of competitive football. Yet, the Moroccan coach emphasizes that this will not compromise their results. He recalled his first season in charge when Pirates lost two games in a row and felt the pressure of fans and the media.

Ouaddou declared that they are not in the circus, but rather part of a professional ecosystem with high expectations. He elaborated, "If you want to remind you about my first two games last season, you think I was happy to have eight bodyguards around me?" This experience has informed his current approach, making it clear that he will select the players he believes can secure victory.

Additionally, Ouaddou dismissed the notion that players would receive opportunities solely based on their need for game time. With more competition for places, he believes that performances in training and preparation should determine who starts. "I’m always going to play the strongest team and the people who deserve to start will show me at training and in the preparation.

I don’t give people flowers (favours) because when we lose three games, who’s head (is) on the block?" The coach’s approach is crucial as Pirates prepare for another grueling season, with the MTN8 remaining their immediate focus. They will defend their Betway Premiership crown and participate in the CAF Champions League, making squad management vital throughout the campaign.
