US Senate advances landmark crypto bill before heading on August recess

The U.S. Senate is set to advance a landmark cryptocurrency bill known as the Clarity Act, which would establish a regulatory framework for digital assets. Rep. John Thune, the Republican majority leader, intends to schedule a procedural vote when the Senate reconvenes from its August recess in mid-September, potentially leading to a full floor debate, according to the U.S. Senate Press Gallery.

The bill requires the backing of at least eight Democrats and all Republican senators to pass. If successful, it would offer the crypto industry its first comprehensive federal rulebook, defining the status of digital tokens as securities or commodities and identifying the regulators overseeing them. This legislation could provide legal clarity for the industry, potentially boosting cryptocurrency adoption.

The Clarity Act would also present President Trump with a second significant policy victory, following his signing of a bill supporting dollar-backed tokens, or stablecoins, last year. Despite opposition from Democrats, who argue the bill could conflict with their family's crypto profits, the crypto industry has spent over $119 million to support pro-crypto candidates aiming to advance the Clarity Act and stablecoin law.

Banks oppose the bill due to concerns that it would allow crypto companies to compete with traditional banks for deposits. Trump, who has profited from crypto ventures, has prioritized crypto reform in his second administration, with the White House actively pushing for the bill's passage.
