The Nixpkgs core team has disbanded

The Nixpkgs core team has announced its decision to disband, marking the end of their 10-month tenure dedicated to bottom-up, consensus-focused governance. The team's work included reforming the committer delegation process, onboarding 19 new committers, and extending the merge bot to empower maintainers. They also re-established contact with GitHub, secured an Enterprise Cloud upgrade, and helped address GitHub security risks.

Additionally, the team established an initial automation/AI policy and successfully resolved many incidents.

However, the team has concluded that the role of core team, while initially promising, has proven to be unsustainable. Factors contributing to this decision include attrition, a lack of engagement and cohesion within the Steering Committee (SC), and ineffective communication. The SC has struggled with micromanagement, unclear positions, ownership of delegated areas, and delayed responses to concerns.

These issues have led to inadequate coordination on important matters such as GSoC, grants initiatives, and AI policy, as well as slow progress on moderation and GitHub org owner reform.

The team emphasizes that the Steering Committee's model of majority votes is not well-suited to delegate-level governance and may contribute to burnout. They believe that a high-trust consensus decision-making model, reminiscent of the core team's approach, would be more effective for Nixpkgs. Despite the challenges and the team's dedication, they recognize the importance of addressing systemic problems in the community and hope that future governance efforts will focus on clear, lightweight processes for decision-making and dispute resolution.

The core team expresses gratitude for the support they have received and regrets their inability to fully resolve the ongoing issues.
