A high school student who was injured while helping a victim of the 'Jang Yun-gi case' was recognized as a meritorious person. The Ministry of Health and Welfare announced on the 22nd that it held a deliberation on the 2023 Sanctions and Rewards Committee and decided to bestow the Meritorious Persons Medal on Lee, a high school student in his second year. Lee was injured on his head and face while subduing the perpetrator, Jang Yun-gi, on March 29, 2022, while helping a female victim who was being attacked by him in Gangnam-gu, Seoul. The Ministry of Health and Welfare explained that Lee's actions correspond to Article 1, Item 5 of the Meritorious Persons Reward Act, which states that 'when a citizen saves a person in danger, or prevents a disaster or crime, and is injured or dies', and thus he was recognized as a meritorious person. The Meritorious Persons Medal is one of the highest honors given by the state to those who have rendered distinguished service to the nation and society. The medal will be presented to Lee in a commendation ceremony at the Government Complex in Sejong on the 25th. Meanwhile, Jang Yun-gi was sentenced to 10 years and six months in prison for the murder of a female college student in Gangnam-gu, Seoul on March 29, 2022.
