‘결혼 페널티’ 개선 예고…이 대통령 “정책 때문에 망설이는 일 없어야”

President Lee Jae-myung has outlined 22 improvement suggestions regarding the country's so-called 'wedding penalty', stating his commitment to addressing the issue. On X (formerly Twitter) on the 8th, he emphasized that "young people should never hesitate to get married due to national policies". He instructed a meeting of senior officials at the Blue House last February to thoroughly investigate the discriminatory disadvantages married people face in loans, rental agreements, and other policies, vowing to find and rectify these issues.

During the Housing National Discussion Conference held in Seoul's Yeouido last month, he urged the Prime Minister to conduct a comprehensive review of all aspects of life to ensure that getting married does not result in additional disadvantages. He said, "I have listened to various opinions through the youth forum, housing forum, and department reviews today, and among the twenty-two prioritized tasks, the most prominent are: securing a home for couples, mitigating the impact of inherited funds on loans, relaxing income requirements for mortgage refinancing, and improving women's maternity benefits.

The document attached to his post lists these 22 issues, including expanding eligibility for special grants for newborns, improving the household purchase limit for newlyweds, and expanding the first housing purchase tax exemption for the first time. The President vowed to carefully examine each of these areas to ensure that the proposed solutions are fair and genuinely beneficial to all.

He expressed his desire to work together with the nation's citizens to bring about tangible and meaningful changes, and to welcome any feedback on other policies that they believe are unjust.
