Second Deputy Majority Whip says Agalga is ‘not some walkover person’ for Minority

Richard Acheampong, Second Deputy Majority Whip and Member of Parliament for Bia East, has refuted claims that newly appointed Majority Leader James Agalga might be intimidated by the Minority in Parliament. Acheampong asserted that Agalga possesses the necessary parliamentary and governmental experience to effectively lead the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Majority caucus.

The appointment comes following President John Dramani Mahama's recent ministerial changes. Acheampong emphasized that in a democratic setting, it is crucial to place individuals in roles where they can perform optimally. He congratulated Agalga on his new leadership position and pledged the support of the Majority leadership as he assumes his duties.

Acheampong emphasized the NDC's intention to formally introduce Agalga as Majority Leader upon the resumption of Parliament. He expressed confidence that the caucus would wholeheartedly support this decision. Acheampong dismissed concerns raised by former Defence Minister Dominic Nitiwul, who questioned Agalga's lack of previous experience in top parliamentary leadership, claiming it could leave him susceptible to Minority pressure.

He refuted this notion by highlighting Agalga's extensive experience in Parliament and government, including his tenure as Deputy Interior Minister and chairmanship of the Defence and Interior Committee. Acheampong also pointed out Agalga's active participation in parliamentary debates, particularly concerning legislative instruments, further underscoring his readiness for the role.

He reiterated that Agalga is not an individual that the Minority can easily overpower. Acheampong reiterated that the Majority caucus would collaborate closely with Agalga to maintain unity and ensure the caucus fulfills its parliamentary responsibilities effectively once the House reconvenes.
