Row over Kerala CM’s helicopter trip refuses to die down as Satheesan appears to contradict earlier statement

Kerala Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan's explanation regarding his ill-fated helicopter trip on July 31, 2026, has been under scrutiny following apparent discrepancies between his statements. Initially, Satheesan claimed the trip was to meet an investment delegation, which arrived after meeting Tamil Nadu's Chief Minister and was set to return to Delhi the following day. However, when questioned about this discrepancy on August 5, he refused to respond and also declined to disclose the investor's identity.

The controversy grew when Communist Party of India (Marxist) State secretary M.V. Govindan alleged Satheesan was "masking facts through repeated lies" during press conferences. Earlier reports suggested the trip was initially halted due to bad weather, but it's now clear that the CM was visiting his father-in-law, who was in hospital.

This revelation has led to further criticism, with CPI(M) Central committee member P. Rajeeve stating it was suspicious that Satheesan traveled alone without his Industries Minister, department officials, or Chief Secretary.

Reacting to allegations from CPI(M) MLA K.U. Jenish Kumar that the Chief Minister did not visit flood-affected areas in Konni constituency or invite him to a meeting, Satheesan claimed he had only visited seriously affected areas. He also dismissed Jenish Kumar's allegation of being excluded from the meeting, stating that some MLAs did participate.

When confronted about Kerala Congress Kuttanad MLA Reji Cheriyan's allegation that the Chief Minister and Revenue Minister were unreachable by phone, Satheesan attributed it to the possibility of a call during a Cabinet meeting.
