Netflix says it's ultimately David Fincher's fault we didn't get a third season of Mindhunter

For years, the absence of a third season of Netflix's Mindhunter series has been surrounded by mystery. The show had made clear indications that it was aiming for a third season, including hints about investigating the BTK Killer, but Netflix never officially canceled it. The series was placed on "indefinite hold" for several years before David Fincher finally put an end to it in 2023.

There were multiple reasons attributed to the series' demise, including Fincher's work on Mank, and Netflix's displeasure with the rising budgets. However, Ted Sarandos, Netflix's co-CEO, recently revealed that the decision to end Mindhunter was ultimately Fincher's choice. Sarandos, who discussed the series at a recent event in New Delhi, stated that they had always anticipated a third season, but Fincher's busy schedule as a meticulous creator made it impossible for him to work on both the series and his film simultaneously.

Sarandos expressed regret over the missed opportunity for a Mindhunter sequel. Notably, this comes just weeks after news emerged that another Netflix project, an American adaptation of the Korean hit Squid Game, had also been cancelled. Despite initially bringing Fincher on board as an executive producer for House of Cards, their collaboration has not been as fruitful in recent years.

Nevertheless, Fincher has a new film due to be released on Netflix this December, with The Adventures Of Cliff Booth being his contribution to the studio's side project.
