PM Wong announces 'major review' of S'pore's approach to supporting families, says govt will stand by S'poreans amid challenges like AI

Prime Minister Lawrence Wong has announced a comprehensive review of Singapore's approach to supporting families, expressing the government's commitment to standing by Singaporeans amidst various challenges. In his National Day Message on August 8, Wong acknowledged the impact of global issues such as the Middle East crisis and advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) on the nation.

While Singapore cannot control developments beyond its borders, Wong emphasized that the country remains in control of its response to these challenges. He stressed that Singapore must continue to prepare for future uncertainties, not just address current ones.

In relation to the Middle East crisis, Wong highlighted the volatility of the international environment, which has led to rising energy prices, disrupted supply chains, and increased costs for households and businesses in Singapore. Despite robust economic growth in the first half of the year and a stable labor market, the government has introduced additional measures to help Singaporeans cope with ongoing uncertainty.

Regarding AI, Wong emphasized that while Singapore has benefited from the technology's growth, particularly in the semiconductor industry, the nation should not accept new technologies uncritically. Instead, Singapore will embrace these advancements on its own terms, ensuring they serve people, strengthen communities, and improve lives.

The government aims to harness AI for productivity improvements and job creation while investing in skills upgrading and workforce training to help Singaporeans adapt to technological changes.

Wong also addressed concerns about the impact of social media on children and young people, promising that the government will strengthen safeguards to protect children and help them navigate the digital world safely and responsibly. Looking to the future, Wong affirmed Singapore's commitment to strengthening energy security, optimizing limited land use, and investing in future infrastructure. However, he stressed that nation-building extends beyond physical infrastructure, emphasizing the importance of remaining open to new ideas, deepening international ties, and welcoming those who contribute to Singapore and its growth.

Despite facing uncertain times, Wong reiterated the nation's strength in resilience, openness, and unity. He urged Singaporeans to remain faithful to one another and the ideals of the Pledge, asserting that these qualities will be vital in building a stronger and better Singapore together.
