Pinarayi Vijayan says ‘disrespect’ shown to rescue worker’s body reflects UDF government’s ‘uncaring’ flood response

Pinarayi Vijayan, leader of the Opposition, criticized the United Democratic Front (UDF) government for its "uncaring" response to the flood-affected people in Kerala, particularly in the aftermath of the disaster at Cherupuzha. The leader accused the government of showing "disrespect" to the body of R. Rajesh, a 36-year-old rescue volunteer who perished during the flood.

Vijayan pointed out that the putrid remains of Rajesh's body were transported back to his family in Thiruvananthapuram due to the government's failure to secure an ambulance equipped with a mobile freezer. The leader condemned the prolonged delay in locating Rajesh's body, emphasizing that any "humane administration" would have ensured a dignified transport.

The Opposition leader also highlighted the government's inattention to the plight of fishers who were lost at sea during stormy weather at Neendakara, Anchuthengu, and Pulluvila. Vijayan further criticized the government for its lack of preparation, warning about the impending disaster, and its failure to heed the weather warning, which resulted in the collapse of a major mud mound at the twin tunnel project entrance.

He accused the government of indulging in divisive politics during the crisis, disinviting opposition legislators from crucial meetings, and not providing basic relief facilities to thousands of residents in relief camps.
