Pentagon removes general involved in coordinating Ukraine support

According to the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, Russia has suffered approximately 1,456,610 military losses in Ukraine since the start of the full-scale invasion on February 24, 2022. This includes 1,190 Russian casualties in the previous day alone. The report also details the extent of Russian military hardware losses, with figures for tanks, armored combat vehicles, vehicles and fuel tanks, artillery systems, rocket systems, air defense systems, aircraft, helicopters, naval vessels, and submarines.

Ukraine's General Staff has not disclosed its own casualties, citing operational secrecy. However, independent analyses from Western think tanks, such as the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), suggest that Russian casualties are significantly higher, with estimates ranging from 2.5:1 to 2:1 compared to Ukrainian losses.

A January 2026 CSIS report estimated that Ukraine may have suffered between 500,000 and 600,000 casualties from February 2022 to December 2025, with an additional 100,000 to 140,000 missing in action (MIAs). Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reportedly stated on February 4 that at least 55,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed in action since the beginning of the war, alongside a larger number unaccounted for.

The ongoing conflict, characterized by intense Russian drone attacks and heavy fighting, has made it extremely challenging for Ukraine to recover and identify the bodies of fallen soldiers, which are crucial for DNA confirmation.
