One of Spain’s largest ever Drug and Migrant Smuggling Networks Dismantled with 78 Arrests

One of Spain's largest drug and migrant smuggling networks has been dismantled through a major international police operation, resulting in 78 arrests. The network operated a two-way trafficking route, transporting synthetic drugs, weapons, and migrants across the western Mediterranean. High-speed boats were utilized to carry goods to Algeria, and then return with migrants, cannabis resin, and other illegal items to Spain.

Investigators estimate that the network brought over 2,000 migrants into Spain via at least 64 sea crossings, generating more than €24 million from migrant smuggling alone. A total of 78 suspected members were arrested in both Spain and Algeria, with 36 arrests in Almería, 13 in Murcia, and 11 in Alicante. The investigation involved collaboration between Spain's National Police, Civil Guard, and international partners including Europol, France, Portugal, and Poland.

The organization's fleet comprised 18 high-speed boats, valued at over €5 million, which were equipped with advanced technology and used to avoid detection. The migrants transported faced extreme danger, crammed into overcrowded and unsecured vessels, often lacking life jackets and navigation lights. Authorities have provisionally frozen or blocked various assets connected to the alleged leaders, including bank accounts, properties, and vehicles.

The operation has also uncovered allegations of violence, coercion, and sexual abuse within the network.
