Man City agree deal to sign Marseille keeper Rulli

Manchester City has reached an agreement to sign Argentine goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli from Marseille for a fee of £1.7 million. The 34-year-old veteran will return to his former club, the Etihad Stadium, where he spent the 2016-17 season but failed to make an appearance in the first team. Rulli has inked a two-year contract with the English club.

Notably, Rulli scored a penalty in the 2021 Europa League final against Manchester United, which ultimately secured Villarreal's victory. He also played a crucial role in denying Manchester United's goalkeeper David de Gea during the tense shootout. Rulli has represented Argentina at the international level, earning eight caps and being part of the teams that won the 2022 World Cup and the 2024 Copa America.

The Manchester City goalkeeper stable has seen changes recently, with England's James Trafford moving to Leeds on a deal worth up to £45 million. Rulli will serve as a backup to the club's current first-choice goalkeeper, Gianluigi Donnarumma. Manager Enzo Maresca will take the final decision on who will wear the captain's armband, with an emphasis on having an English player in the leadership group.

The current leadership group comprises Ruben Dias, Erling Haaland, and Rodri, with Phil Foden, Marc Guehi, and Nico O'Reilly among the English players who could potentially rise to the occasion.
