Ksh1.5M payment: Detectives pursue new lead in Victoria Mutiso murder case

Police are investigating two officers potentially involved in the murder of psychologist Dr. Victoria Nthunya Mutiso, as they pursue fresh leads suggesting a Ksh1.5 million payment to those who carried out the crime. The preliminary findings reveal that three individuals were promised a total of Ksh1.5 million to execute the murder, with each expected to receive Ksh500,000 upon completion.

Some of the funds were reportedly paid out before the killing, as the scheme was being orchestrated. Detectives intensified their search for the officers on Saturday, August 8, 2026, visiting their past workplaces and gathering records and evidence to trace their movements and potential involvement in the murder. They also examined firearm records at multiple police stations to determine how the weapon used in the shooting was obtained and whether it was later used by another officer.

The murder weapon is believed to have originated from a police inspector and was subsequently used by another officer to kill Dr. Mutiso. The investigation also explores a possible connection between the killing and a contentious land dispute in Mlolongo, Machakos County. Investigators have linked a stolen Toyota Prado, which was among those taken during the demolition of Mutiso's property, to potential suspects.

Police had been at the scene on February 12, 2026 to enforce a court-ordered demolition. Dr. Mutiso had previously reported threats against her life to police on July 7, 2026, when she stated that three men on a motorcycle had threatened her. Now, investigators are examining if these threatening individuals were linked to the officers who later killed her.

Dr. Mutiso was fatally shot on July 29, 2026 while commuting to work in Nairobi's Upper Hill area. A postmortem conducted by Chief Government Pathologist Johansen Oduor revealed that she suffered three gunshot wounds, including two to the head and one through the upper back. The case has already led to the arraignment of a mother and her son in court, as detectives continue to pursue additional suspects and unravel the intricate web of the alleged payment, police officers, land dispute, and prior threats.
