Incentivise alumni donations to public schools – Achimota OAA President urges GETFund, GRA, Education Ministry

Former Achimotan President Joel Edmund Nettey has urged key institutions - the Ghana Education Trust Fund, Ghana Revenue Authority, and the Ministry of Education - to introduce incentives for alumni and private investors in Ghana's public schools. While many are willing to contribute, he says goodwill alone may not sustain the needed infrastructure investments.

At the groundbreaking ceremony for a new dormitory at Achimota School, funded by alumnus Ebenezer Saka Addo-Mensah through GETFund's Education Financing and Partnership Initiative, Nettey noted that alumni often ask about personal benefits of contributing. He proposed tangible incentives like tax rebates, discounts, or other recognisable benefits to encourage more participation.

GETFund Administrator Paul Adjei echoed the call for incentives, appealing to the Ministry of Education for policy support. The Education Financing and Partnership Initiative aims to mobilise additional resources and private-sector participation in education. The Education Minister, Haruna Iddrisu, welcomed the new approach and directed GETFund to set aside US$250 million for infrastructure in 2027, along with potential World Bank funding of US$300 million to expand education access.
