NALAG President throws down the challenge: Deliver development or lose public trust

NALAG President Alfred Asiedu Adjei has issued a challenge to Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in Ghana, demanding tangible development and accountable leadership to restore public trust. In an address at the Ashanti Regional Conference of Presiding Members, Adjei emphasized that citizens are no longer content with mere promises and political rhetoric, but instead seek visible improvements in their communities.

He urged local government officials to prioritize solving everyday problems such as road construction, sanitation, healthcare, education, employment, and flood control. Adjei stressed that the credibility of local government institutions now hinges on their ability to deliver on these issues. He called for enhanced transparency in public resource management, greater citizen participation, and stronger financial accountability.

Adjei also advocated for the adoption of digital technology, data-driven planning, and increased mobilization of internally generated revenue to boost service delivery. He further advocated for mainstreaming environmental sustainability, disaster preparedness, and inclusive governance by ensuring equal representation of women, youth, and persons with disabilities in local decision-making.

Adjei reaffirmed the National Association of Local Authorities of Ghana’s (NALAG) commitment to improving the welfare of Assembly Members and Presiding Members through policy advocacy. He reminded participants that Ghana's national development ultimately depends on the performance of its local governments, stating that when Assemblies succeed, districts, regions, and ultimately Ghana succeed.
