Govt. simplifies NEET-UG 2026 counselling process

Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda assessed the readiness for the upcoming NEET UG counselling 2026 on July 29, 2026. The counselling process has seen several technology-driven and student-friendly reforms to enhance transparency, accessibility, and simplify the admission procedure. One significant reform is the one-time physical reporting framework, which aims to minimize repeated visits from candidates.

Post seat allocation, students can choose between a Freeze or Float option online. Those opting for Freeze must physically report to their allotted institute within the given timeframe to finalize admission procedures, including document verification and fee payment. On the other hand, candidates choosing Float can complete admission formalities, including document verification, online during subsequent rounds, without needing physical presence at the allotted institute.

This option remains viable up to the third round of counselling. After the third round, candidates with allotted seats must physically visit their respective institutions for document verification, fee payment, and completing formalities. A key addition this year is the online resignation facility, allowing candidates to withdraw their allotted seat online through the MCC Counselling Portal, barring any restrictions as per the counselling rules and timelines.

The review also underlined measures for enhanced transparency and operational efficiency, such as pre-populated candidate data from the National Testing Agency (NTA), online document verification, seat matrix validation by the National Medical Commission (NMC), and institute verification. Special focus has been given to improving accessibility for Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD).

The Ministry has also digitized the admission process for NRI candidates, enabling them to complete the registration entirely online, adhering to the stipulated eligibility criteria.
