Germany warns of constant hybrid attack threats after drone incident

Germany is facing daily threats of hybrid warfare by foreign entities, according to Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt. This threat arises from espionage, sabotage, cyberattacks, and covert operations aimed at spreading fear, destabilizing society, and causing direct harm. Dobrindt emphasized that while Germany is not at war, it is a constant target of such hybrid warfare.

The recent discovery of an explosive-laden drone at Leipzig/Halle Airport in eastern Germany heightened security concerns. Some lawmakers pointed fingers at Russia, but German authorities have not identified any specific country responsible. Russia denied any involvement, labeling the incident a fabricated provocation. Additionally, two drones were detected near a military base in North Rhine-Westphalia, though no connection to the Leipzig incident has been confirmed.

Germany is intensifying efforts to safeguard critical infrastructure, including airports and military installations, against these rising threats. Minister Dobrindt announced that the government would invest in domestic drone research to enhance detection, tracking, and counter-drone systems. This response may prompt Berlin to allocate more funds to security and defense technology as European nations aim to bolster protection against the growing risk of unconventional attacks.
