Fastmail offers EU data region

Fastmail now allows its users to choose the location where their email data is stored within the European Union. Previously, all data was stored solely in US data centers. By offering EU data storage, Fastmail provides customers with more control over where their personal information is kept. The company built its new Amsterdam data center to the same high standards as its existing facilities in Philadelphia and St Louis, using its own hardware and software specifications.

Encryption and redundancy practices remain consistent across all locations. While the EU region does not guarantee that data will stay exclusively within the EU, Fastmail aims to be transparent about data handling. If your billing address indicates you are in Europe, your data was automatically migrated to the EU location before this announcement.

You can opt to switch your data back to the US location if desired. For those not automatically assigned to the EU region, there is a way to request migration. The process involves moving data from one location to another, which may take longer for initial transfers due to the need for synchronization across the ocean. Regardless of the chosen region, all data is encrypted at rest.

Users can adjust their region in their settings, and Fastmail will migrate the primary copy of their data accordingly.
