Fastmail offers EU data region

Fastmail has begun offering EU data storage regions for its email service. Previously, all accounts were stored in the US. Now, users can choose to have their data stored in secure servers located in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. This new option was created with Fastmail's own hardware and software specifications, mirroring the high standards of their existing data centers in Philadelphia and St. Louis.

All data, regardless of location, is encrypted at rest and managed by Fastmail's in-house team, not outsourced cloud providers. While the company does not offer a GDPR-compliant guarantee that data remains solely in the EU, they pre-selected users with billing addresses in or near Europe for the EU region, with their data transferred en masse to Amsterdam.

Users who were not initially selected can opt-in to the EU region, with data migration to and from the US being a slower process due to the need for synchronization. The EU data region is an investment for Fastmail, but they believe the choice should be left to the user, not dictated by a surcharge.
