Assam flood: Over 1.55 lakh people hit, toll at 98; damage assessment from Sunday

Over 1.55 lakh (1,55,849) people have been affected by the Assam floods, according to officials. The death toll has risen to 98, with one additional fatality reported from Mahmora revenue circle in Charaideo district. The flood situation remains critical as 13 districts - Sivasagar, Golaghat, Nagaon, Hojai, Sonitpur, Dhemaji, Darrang, Biswanath, Kamrup, Lakhimpur, Udalguri, Jorhat and Charaideo - continue to be impacted.

Golaghat district has borne the brunt of the disaster, with 58,750 people affected, followed by Sivasagar and Jorhat. The state government plans to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the flood damage from August 9 to 30 in the four worst-hit districts - Jorhat, Sivasagar, Golaghat and Charaideo. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma assured that no household will be left out and the government will provide maximum permissible relief as per norms.

The first assessment list is expected to be compiled by September 10, after which the government aims to estimate the funds needed for permanent rehabilitation. In the meantime, 55 relief camps are operating to shelter over 10,000 displaced people, and another 18 relief distribution centers are functional. Additionally, 10,748.64 hectares of crop area remains submerged, and over 47,000 animals have been affected.
