Arsenal sign Brazil midfielder Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle

Arsenal have secured the signing of Brazilian midfielder Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle United on a long-term contract, the club confirmed on Saturday. The 28-year-old joins the north London outfit after four-and-a-half years at Newcastle, where he made nearly 200 appearances and played a pivotal role in the team's Carabao Cup triumph in 2025, as stated on the club's website.

The transfer resolves weeks of speculation surrounding Guimaraes' future, making him an Arsenal player now, according to PUNCH Online. Guimaraes also contributed to Newcastle's qualification for the UEFA Champions League over the past two seasons.

Born in Brazil, Guimaraes kicked off his professional career with Audax in Sao Paulo in 2015, before transferring to Athletico Paranaense two years later. He secured four major titles with the Brazilian club before moving to Lyon in January 2020. Two seasons later, he joined Newcastle in January 2022 and has been a regular in the Premier League since. Known for his versatility, Guimaraes can play as a defensive midfielder or in a box-to-box role.

Speaking at the club's announcement, Arsenal's sporting director Andrea Berta highlighted that Guimaraes would bolster the club's midfield and offer additional leadership and competition within the squad. "With Bruno joining us, we are further strengthening the heart of our team. As we have all seen, Bruno can play as a defensive midfielder and as a box-to-box player," Berta stated.

"He combines quality with quantity, and has provided goals and assists for his team every year," he added. Berta also noted that Guimaraes' arrival would give manager Mikel Arteta more options to develop Arsenal's playing style while increasing competition within the squad.

Guimaraes will don the number 39 shirt and integrate with his new teammates immediately, pending the completion of regulatory procedures.
