5,000 Health Workers Mobilised for Eclipse Emergency Plan

Over 5,000 healthcare workers and 22 ambulances will be mobilized in Spain's Valencian Community ahead of Wednesday's solar eclipse. The emergency operation, organized by the regional government, includes a range of medical professionals like doctors, nurses, emergency medical technicians, and porters. Health centers near viewing locations will extend their operating hours, while hospital emergency departments and ophthalmology services will receive additional staff.

Specialized eye units will be prepared to handle injuries from improperly viewed eclipses. With almost double the usual medical resources deployed, 13 new units and extended operating hours will be in service for nine others. Nine non-emergency transport vehicles, two Basic Life Support ambulances, and two specialist units will also be deployed.

Authorities aim to reduce non-urgent activities and expedite hospital discharges. Expect heavy traffic in the Valencian Community, with a reported 400,000 to 1.5 million potential eclipse viewers. Regional Health Minister Marciano Gómez cautioned that large crowds might impede emergency services' ability to reach victims. Retina damage from inadequate eclipse viewing is a primary concern, with officials urging the use of ISO-certified eclipse glasses.

Other unsafe viewing methods include sunglasses, X-rays, and homemade filters. Spectators are advised to stay hydrated, use sunscreen, wear hats, and seek shade, especially those with chronic conditions.
