2 drones spotted flying over German military base after drone with explosives found at cargo airport

On Thursday evening, surveillance cameras at the Bleiberg Barracks in Mechernich, Germany, captured the appearance of two drones flying over the facility. The German Joint Force Command confirmed the sightings later in the day, and military police were dispatched to the area. The Bundeswehr stated that the police department in Euskirchen is handling the investigation, though they have not provided further details at this time.

Earlier on Tuesday, a drone carrying explosives was discovered at Leipzig/Halle Airport, just before midnight. The explosive device was successfully defused, but German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt described the incident as a "new quality of danger." Leipzig/Halle is a significant international cargo hub, supporting the delivery of supplies to Ukraine, including Ukrainian military aircraft like the Antonov transport planes.

The airport also serves as a base for NATO's Strategic Airlift International Solution (SALIS), which operates daily in transporting equipment to NATO forces.

The drone sightings have raised concerns about the escalating use of unmanned aerial vehicles in the region, following a series of incidents involving drones with explosive devices at major cargo airports.
