Zohran Mamdani tells Amazon, Walmart and 40 others: Stop selling these devices

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has extended the deadline for homeowners to submit exemptions applications for the city's new pied-à-terre tax, now due September 18 instead of the original August 21 cutoff, according to a Business Insider report. The decision, made in coordination with Department of Finance Commissioner Richard Lee, was prompted by resident complaints about unclear email notifications and a complicated exemption process.

The extension allows property owners more time to demonstrate their primary residences or eligibility for exemption from the surcharge. Mamdani's office revealed additional outreach efforts across boroughs to enhance communication. Some New Yorkers have expressed being wrongly targeted by the tax, while others claim securing exemptions is excessively difficult.

Mamdani acknowledged these concerns, stating the extension ensures those who received 'You may be subject to...' letters have the necessary time and information. The pied-à-terre tax, introduced in April, targets secondary properties valued over $5 million in New York City, backed by Gov. Kathy Hochul. Expected to generate $500 million annually, the tax aims to address the city's $2.2 billion budget shortfall.

However, wealthy residents like Ken Griffin and Bill Ackman, as well as President Donald Trump, have criticized the measure. Amazon founder Jeff Bezos recently supported the tax, comparing it to hotel taxes for out-of-towners, but warned against overtaxing hotels due to potential economic consequences.
