What to Know About Thailand's Deadliest School Shooting in Years

On August 7, 2026, a 14-year-old boy in Thailand executed at least seven people and wounded over 20 others before taking his own life, marking the deadliest school shooting in the country in nearly four years. The gunman, whose name remains undisclosed due to his minor status, first killed his grandparents before targeting his high school, Debsirin Nonthaburi School, located outside Bangkok.

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul confirmed that no students were killed, but more than 20 individuals were injured, with nine of them in critical condition. Video footage from the scene shows students seeking refuge under tables and bullet casings scattered on the ground. Anutin revealed that the suspect had more than 30 rounds of ammunition remaining when he committed suicide.

The Prime Minister suggested that the motive may have been academic stress, as the suspect had been complaining about the pressure of his studies. The suspect's grandmother, who was also killed, was reportedly strict with him to ensure academic success. Authorities noted that the gunman had searched for information on mass shootings prior to the attack and had access to a registered firearm belonging to his grandfather.

Following the incident, Thai officials are implementing new safety measures, including the introduction of a new law that restricts gun ownership to government officials on duty. The Thai Ministry of Education pledged to enhance school security and protect students, while Thai Deputy Prime Minister Yodchanan Wongsawat announced a mental health action plan to support affected teachers and students.

Thailand, known for its high civilian gun ownership rate, has experienced several mass shootings in recent years, including a 2022 incident where a former police officer killed over 30 people, mostly children, at a daycare center. Another shooting in 2023 involved a teenager who fatally shot two individuals at a Bangkok shopping mall.
