Viral police pursuit video in WA's north puts government under pressure

A youth crime epidemic in WA's far north Kimberley region has put government policies under scrutiny. Footage of a teenage boy leading police on a dangerous pursuit through the town of Kununurra went viral, garnering global attention. The state government plans to establish a youth-focused night space and wraparound services for at-risk youth, though the project remains months away.

Community leaders question whether simply deploying more police officers will effectively curb the crime wave. The east Kimberley town, 3,200km north of Perth, has long faced youth crime issues, with stolen cars and police chases becoming routine. In response, WA Police launched Operation Regional Shield, dispatching additional officers to Kununurra.

However, the initiative is seen as reactive rather than proactive. The Shire of Wyndham East Kimberley president welcomed the increased police presence but emphasized the community's need for long-term solutions. A proposed $5.9 million youth night space has faced delays and community opposition. WA Police Commissioner Col Blanch warned that youth crime is cyclical, and while flare-ups are expected, the community remains committed to addressing the issue through increased police presence and community cooperation.
