Trump is losing his war on wind power

A recent US District Court ruling has dealt a significant blow to President Trump's efforts to halt wind power development in the United States. The court ordered the government to resume the process of approving new wind projects, overturning the Department of Defense's (DoD) decision to cease involvement in 2025. This decision effectively brought a halt to all wind development in the US.

The DoD's stance was based on national security concerns, claiming that wind turbines could interfere with radar equipment, thus posing a threat. However, the court found this argument unconvincing, particularly when a classified report used by the DoD was scrutinized. The administration had previously tried to block wind development through various means, including asserting that drone developments would create radar interference risks.

Despite these attempts, courts have not supported the administration's claims, especially when they examined the classified report.

In an attempt to circumvent these legal hurdles, the Trump administration resorted to offering companies financial incentives not to pursue wind development. This strategy was mirrored for onshore wind projects. The situation escalated when the government stopped participating in the process for evaluating potential issues posed by wind turbines and negotiating changes with developers in August 2025.

Initially, the government refused to sign off on previously agreed-upon modifications, later refused to draft new agreements, and ultimately stopped participating in negotiations entirely. This obstruction has effectively halted all wind development in the United States, thwarting President Trump's ambitious wind power initiative.
