Trump denies air defense aid to Ukraine, insisting U.S. stockpiles must come first

U.S. President Donald Trump dismissed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's request for long-range missiles or extra Patriot air defense batteries during a press conference on August 6. When asked if Washington would supply these to Ukraine, Trump stated that the U.S. also requires missiles, blaming the previous administration's Joe Biden for the depleted stockpiles.

He claimed they were "full" when he left office, but now the reserves are being rebuilt. Trump affirmed that the U.S. is continually replenishing its arsenals and retains weaponry that can be deployed as needed. Referring to the surge in Russian attacks on Ukraine's civilian populace, Trump declared that the U.S. is not directly engaged in the conflict and is geographically removed from it.

However, he expressed concern over casualties on both sides. On August 5, Russian forces launched four Zircon/Oniks anti-ship missiles and 24 Iskander-M/S-400 ballistic missiles towards Ukraine. Due to a lack of specialized interception systems, the air defense forces failed to intercept any of the incoming missiles. The enemy strikes resulted in 17 deaths and 44 injuries in Kyiv and Kyiv Oblast.

The primary targets were a railway station, infrastructure installations, and a commercial warehouse complex belonging to Epicentr retail network. On August 5, it was reported that U.S. President Donald Trump had rejected a request from Zelenskyy during an Oval Office meeting for several hundred additional interceptor missiles for Patriot systems.

Later that day, Zelenskyy conversed with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte about bolstering Ukrainian air defense capabilities. Zelenskyy disclosed that deliveries of air defense interceptors to Ukraine from international partners have decreased by two-thirds compared to 2025 levels, suggesting this decline could be due to conflict in the Middle East or potential political pressure from ally nations.
