Trump announces $3bn in mining projects as part of critical minerals push

US President Donald Trump has unveiled a plan to invest $3 billion in mining projects to lessen reliance on Chinese critical minerals. Speaking at a mining roundtable at the State Department, Trump emphasized the importance of these materials in manufacturing advanced weaponry, automobiles, and other essential products. He stated that the Pentagon is providing a $1.4 billion loan to build a battery facility in Washington state and investing $400 million to expand scandium production, a rare earth used in aerospace and aviation materials.

Additionally, the Pentagon committed $150 million to scale rare earth-free magnet production in Minnesota and provided $80 million for mining schools. The Export-Import Bank is lending $58 million to critical mineral companies developing projects in copper, graphite, tantalum, and niobium. The US Geological Survey's recent list of 60 critical minerals for national security and electrification revealed that the US is 100% net-import dependent on 16 of these nonfuel minerals.

Chinese export restrictions have raised concerns about the vulnerability of critical minerals supply chains, prompting western nations to diversify their acquisitions. The Trump administration has taken equity stakes in supply chain companies, established a $12 billion stockpile, and engaged in diplomatic efforts to secure supply chains and set price floors.

Trump views Greenland as a potential source of minerals like cobalt, copper, and nickel, stating that the US must develop its own supplies for national security purposes.
