Total Solar Eclipse 2026: Rare celestial event to sweep Northern Hemisphere, but will India witness it?

In August 2026, a rare total solar eclipse will traverse the Northern Hemisphere, offering a spectacular event for skywatchers in Europe, North America, and the Arctic. The eclipse will commence over a remote area of northern Russia, proceeding through the Arctic, Greenland, Iceland, and the Iberian Peninsula, where it will reach its maximum duration off Iceland's western coast.

Northern Spain and a small section of Portugal will witness totality just before sunset, providing a breathtaking spectacle. However, India will not experience any phase of the eclipse due to the alignment of the Sun, Moon, and Earth. Astronomers emphasize the significance of safe viewing practices, recommending the use of ISO 12312-2 certified eclipse glasses during the partial phases.

Using cameras, binoculars, or telescopes without proper solar filters is advised against to prevent permanent eye damage. Solar eclipses occur roughly once every one to two years globally, but the path of totality is quite narrow, making each event unique. The 2026 event also precedes another major eclipse in 2027, which will be visible across southern Spain, northern Africa, and the Arabian Peninsula, with a maximum totality of six minutes and 23 seconds.

A longer total solar eclipse is expected not until 2114. Spain is also slated to observe an annular eclipse on January 26, 2028, adding to the country's reputation for hosting unusual major eclipse events.
