The growing Russian threat giving Ukraine only seconds to react

Russian ballistic missiles pose a significant threat to Ukraine, with air defense systems having only seconds to detect and intercept them. Unlike cruise missiles, ballistic missiles travel at high speeds after launching, making them difficult to detect and destroy.

Ukraine's Patriot air defense systems are the only ones currently capable of intercepting Russian Iskander-M, S-400, and Zircon missiles. However, Ukraine has a shortage of batteries and interceptors, limiting its ability to protect all cities. Russia's missile arsenal includes various types, and the threat is compounded by the use of cruise missiles, drones, and decoys.

Ukraine has called for increased deliveries of interceptor missiles, with the US exploring the possibility of domestic production. NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte has also emphasized the urgent need for air defense support. Meanwhile, Ukraine is taking steps to destroy Russian missile launchers and infrastructure, aiming to reduce the number of missiles that need to be intercepted.
