Suspicious drones sighted over German military base days after Leipzig airport incident

Two drones were spotted over a military base in Mechernich, western Germany, on Aug. 7, according to a Bundeswehr official. This incident occurred two days after a security breach at Leipzig/Halle Airport, where a drone was found near a Ukrainian transport plane and another collided with a cargo plane, causing minor damage and suspending flight operations.

Military police initially investigated the Mechernich sighting, but it has now been transferred to local law enforcement in Euskirchen. The incident comes amid a pattern of suspected Russian-linked drone operations disrupting airports and military bases across Europe. Germany's Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt described the situation as "very serious," and authorities suspect the recent drones may be linked to Russia.
