Several dead in Thailand high school shooting after suspect kills grandparents

In Nonthaburi, Thailand, a high school shooting occurred outside Bangkok on Friday, resulting in at least six deaths and numerous injuries. The incident took place at the Debsirin Nonthaburi School, located in Nonthaburi province, northwest of Bangkok. Police spokesperson Trairong Piwpan provided conflicting casualty figures, with some sources stating six deaths and others reporting five teachers and three students killed.

Health Minister Pattana Promphat reported 22 injuries, with nine in critical condition, while Deputy Interior Minister Polapee Suwunchwee claimed five teachers died, and the shooter, who was 14 years old, killed his two grandparents at home before attacking the school. The motive remains under investigation, but police confirmed the shooter used a gun belonging to his grandfather, who fired at least 26 bullets and had 34 rounds remaining.

The gun was believed to have been taken from a family member. Students reportedly hid in a classroom during the attack before being cleared by police. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul offered condolences and tasked officials with supporting the victims. Similar incidents have occurred in Thailand, including a 17-year-old who stole a gun and targeted a public high school in southern Thailand in February, and a 14-year-old accused of a shooting at a Bangkok shopping mall in 2023.
