Ransomware attacks spike as world distracted by AI

Ransomware attacks surged by nearly 20% in July, with UK-based firm Comparitech recording 799 incidents, up from 668 in June. July ranked as the second-most active month for ransomware attacks, trailing March, which saw 805 attacks. The primary targets of these attacks were finance companies, tech firms, pharmaceutical companies, medical billers, and the education sector, each experiencing significant increases in ransomware attacks.

In contrast, attacks on utility companies and legal firms saw a decline in July. The United States was the most affected country, with 322 attacks, followed by Germany with 40 incidents. Qilin, a ransomware gang responsible for the 2024 attack on pathology provider Synnovis, claimed 125 victims in July, while the Gentlemen, a newer group, led with 135 claimed victims.

Both gangs accounted for nearly 33% of all attacks in July. While the cyber landscape may be preoccupied with AI advancements, traditional threats like ransomware continue to pose significant risks. Preventative measures include using strong authentication methods, keeping systems updated, and maintaining regular backups.
